Bad Words

If I could figure out Facebook, I probably wouldn't be here. Ha! Not a very auspicious start, huh? Well, it's the bloody truth. I don't really understand Facebook....well, I mean, I get the networking part -- the virtual "running into" old friends and stuff -- that's cool. But all the other stuff - all the "apps" -- gawd, I hate that word almost as much as the oft touted "appy" Seriously. Is it that bad? Do we have to shorten every word?

Speaking of words I hate, how 'bout (that's for all you word shorteners out there) we list a few. I invite you to respond with your own -- in fact I'd love to hear the words you hate! Okay some of these are actually more than one word -- not in order of importance:

1) "journey" a true journey is something someone like Marco Polo took, it is not an emotional experience or a thought process. For example getting through a sad movie is not a "journey" Learning something new about myself, like, for example that I am capable of restraint when people use the word "journey" is not itself a "journey."

2) "givin' 'er" now I'm not quite sure if I've spelled this correctly, but it means (loosely) to do something with great vigor. As in "I was really givin er" I find this most offensive. Some may find me a bit uppity here -- I know, you might think me a bit, oh, shall we say, snobbish? I can live with that.

3) 24/7 I have no rationale for this one. I just don't like it.

Okay, I think I've spent enough time painting myself as a nasty picky witch! I'm not really (honest!) it's just these things -- well, okay, I'm not a fan of "hooped" either, but seriously, I love language and all the fantastic ways it can be used.....okay most of the ways it can be used...

I hope you will chime in and add your thoughts to the list.

Ah, I agree about the "givin' 'er", Robin. I do. I think the one that gets me is "anyways". "So I'm like, anyways," is not a valid way to begin a sentence.

We, the grammar and literary-conscious are few and far between in this world, and making our way around the bustling metropolis of Kamloops is enough to drive us mad. Countless misused apostrophes leap from storefronts and hand-painted signs...it's like some strange, post-grammar-apocalyptic existence!

Have you seen the movie FUBAR? It is a mockumentary about metal-culture in Canada. That movie epitomizes (and may even have coined the term "givin' 'er"). In that movie it is used frequently as a way to articulate an attitude of not caring about the world and just living in some sort of pleasure-filled moment.. like a carpe diem for Iron Maiden fans (if that exists?) haha. The movie is also a guilty pleasure of mine.
